Pilates instructors are trained in building awareness of the inner core and teaching how to correctly recruit it. (Every human being has an inner core, consisting of the following muscles: Transversus Abdominals, Diaphragm, Internal Oblique, Multifidus, Pelvic Floor and posterior fibers of the psoas.)

Traditionally, instructors cue the activation of the inner core before the movement begins, meaning the inner core precedes the movement. This type of recruitment is conscious initially, becoming subconscious over time. When lumbar spine pain is present, the timing of the recruitment of the inner core can often relieve the pain by lessening the load on the spine during movement. The timing of recruitment of the inner core is therefore critical when teaching exercises in the abdominal block.

It is important to bear in mind that Pilates is considerably more than just abdominal work and the cueing of Transversus Abdominis (TA). The abdominals represent only one muscle group in the body and the objective of every informed Pilates instructor is to construct a well-balanced class targeting a variety of muscle groups that challenge with different types of muscular contractions, e.g. both isometric and isotonic.

Abdominal work is typically done by flexing the spine. This can be achieved in a number of different positions, including standing, sitting, kneeling, supine, prone and side lying. The abdominals serve as the support system for the spine, especially in spinal extension exercises, and assist in correctly distributing the load throughout the spine.

The Hundreds Prep on the Reformer is often used as an introduction to the abdominal block with a client. It is recommended that you teach it without any resistance, in order to establish control and functional movement. Later sessions will allow you to introduce load by adding springs and straightening the legs. The Hundreds is a signature Pilates exercise and its benefits are far-reaching. Besides building endurance, it enhances lung capacity and challenges stability, brings inner focus and demands deep concentration.
